yeah i write poems … and what

enough-speaking…I sew my mouth after this Rough-weekend. Rough nights call for tough-fights…2AM up-like the ceiling…These buttery lips that twisted my tongue, had sinister plans when the evening was done. she spoke of a man whom she wished would carry her, into caribbean waves right after he married her. now im alone without the holiday spirit, because as I get older I grow to fear it. A sip of the devils flask used to provide a mask…but now it just sets me up for shame in my past. For love i am spoiled with one girl to blame it on. I read from my heart but realize that her name is gone. My windshield is cloudy, my tires are low. my sight is as bright as the sky when it snows. her touch is a branch that provides for a crow, a glimpse at the promising world right below.

The Funk Brothers (and a little fun for you bloggers)

funkbrothers

A lot of people think hip hop started in the 80’s.  Some people that know their shit believe hip hop started in the 70’s.  Well, me… I am out of my fucking mind so I am gonna go out on a limb here & say hip hop started in the 60’s.  Well, atleast hip-hop style production.  For those who aren’t familiar with The Funk Brothers…X out of this blog right now, and get your google on.  I was put on to the musical gods a couple of years ago by Big KO, and my appreciation for The Funk Brothers has only steadily increased since then.  Responsible for every Motown hit/sad song/funky track/ballad/club song etc… in my eyes they spawned Hip-Hop.  No disrespect to the producers that I grew up listening to, or have recently emerged from the underground to finally gain respect in this jaded game… But I would much rather do an album with the Funk Brothers than any collaboration of Hip Hop Producers from day one until now.  I recently got blessed with a couple of Marvin Gaye instrumentals, and when I tell you my head was bobbing – you would have thought I popped 10 percocet.  For example, this isn’t the most intricate instrumental of all time…but the chords they picked and the drum patterns they used would have only been done justice by such an amazing talent as Marvin Gaye.  You don’t believe me? Well, I took out the time to search the lyrics to “Mercy Mercy Me” & tried to sing it over this instrumental.  First off, I am no Sam Cooke… but I am definitely not tone def.  I even have the Marvin Gaye vocal tones embedded into my brain from years of listening to this song, but for some reason it is still very challenging to try and keep up with.  Go ahead, sing it…have a ball… by the way this is DEFINITELY not the last post about the Funk Bros… just an intro…

Sorry, I am not that internet savvy… you’ll have to download the link…besides I almost threw my computer out the window trying to figure out how to fuckin upload something on youtube….

Ayo Vic I Got You…

LYRICS:

Woo ah, mercy mercy me
Ah things ain’t what they used to be, no no
Where did all the blue skies go? Poison is the wind that blows from the north and south and east
Woo mercy, mercy me, mercy father
Ah things ain’t what they used to be, no no
Oil wasted on the ocean and upon our seas, fish full of mercury Ah oh mercy, mercy me Ah things ain’t what they used to be, no no
Radiation under ground and in the sky
Animals and birds who live nearby are dying
Oh mercy, mercy me Ah things ain’t what they used to be
What about this overcrowded land
How much more abuse from man can she stand? Oh, na na…
My sweet Lord… No
My Lord… My sweet Lord

Throwback of the Week

Posted in Music with tags , , , , , , , , , , on December 17, 2008 by djjohnjohn

Whats goin on everyone!  Welcome to the Throwback section of the “Pop ch Blog” hosted by yours truly, Dj John John of Orena Records.  I will be featuring one of my personal favorite hip-hop tracks from the golden era every week, including information about the production/cuts/lyrics from the opinion of a DJ/Producer.

My first entry is a track called “Metal Thangz” by Street Smartz later known as FT.  This is a gritty New York anthem from 1996 featuring Brooklyn’s own O.C. & Organized Konfusion’s Pharoahe Monch.  I first heard the beat on a clear cassette which was actually a beat tape from producer/DJ O.Gee of D.I.T.C.  The cassette also included “Your Life” later used by O.C. on the “Soul in the Hole” soundtrack.  O.C. sets the track off with a powerful couple of bars: “Unfold, remarkable soul…cold blooded bleeding icicles equivelent to north pole”…the hard track continues into FT’s rapid fire flow with the undertone of BIG K.O. cutting the hook back into the last bar before Pharoahe Monch’s delivery steals the show.  The beat is a raw and repetitive without getting redundant, and gives you that classic Diggin’ in the crates feeling.  This track in my opinion, may have been one the top 5 best underground collaborations of the late 90’s & proved so by impressive vinyl sales.  Street Smartz at the time wasn’t exactly blown up, but picked the perfect mesh of lyrical balance and boom baps which made him a respected name on the underground hip hop scene.  Street Smartz blasts in with crazy wordplay and includes one of the funniest lines at the time, “I’m sorta-psycho like a retard on a motorcycle” which had me and my crew in stitches the first time we heard it.  Sit back, light up, and let this track take you back in time.  Fat shout to Big K.O., O.Gee, F.T., Buckwild and Skill(Tru Criminal Records)…

The Dinosaur

akai1 Many many years ago in a little town named Cedarhurst, Long Island…my music career was spawned.  My uncle Paulie O was already lacing boom baps with Dj K.O. (BIG KO) & slowly molding a production style I would one day call my own. The SP1200 was and still is a beast of a machine…but they strived for something more powerful & more state of the art.  The two were cruising around town listening to K Solo & randomly passed a Sam Ash during their travels.  KO clipped his blunt, and they waltzed into Sam Ash like they owned the joint.  A ray of light shined and lead them staring down a brand new sparkly Roger Lynn Akai MPC 3000.  Paul whipped out a stack of Franklins & they headed back to the crib to test the new machine that would ultimately change things forever.  After becoming friendly with the monstrous “MP”, they were banging out tracks left and right & finally moved the equipment to Paul’s garment warehouse in Inwood.  The room they had set up shop in was a charcoal grey, grimy, damp cell with crumbling concrete that smelled of blunt ashes & spilled cognac.  The perfect setting to make NYC RAWNESS.  The first track I recall hearing was a snappy rendition of the Willie Hutch track, “Mellow Mellow” which one of the local MC’s Cognac McRaw ripped up With KO cutting the ever so familiar Nas Vocals from “One Love”: (Fuck it black no time for looking back, its done). From that point, I knew what I wanted to do with my life.  I wasn’t sure how I was going to accomplish learning to produce, but I was definitely determined.  Paul started working on Wall Street, and slowly the time he had set for production was deteriorating.  He quickly without hesitation gave me the MPC & the manual, a couple floppy disks & some production tricks which I still use to this day.  Although that MPC3000 has long been retired with some internal computer issues & an invoice for repair that isn’t worth the bread, I recall the toughness of the machine.  I use the MPC 2000xl now, and though I hit the pads quite hard when Im working…I don’t get the confidence that I can use a mallot to lay my drums as I did with the 3000.  For old times sake, I am going to frame it & hang it up in the studio…as a reminder during times of withered inspiration, one piece of equipment can spawn a whole new era of creativity.  R.I.P. to the Dinosaur … My MPC3000.

Scalpel… check!

So we are nearing the final stages of the “Autopsy” project, and I’ll tell you right now…I am proud of it.  More so than “Each Dawn I Die” because while writing/producing the material I was in a totally new state of mind, and as cliche as it sounds – “Found myself as an artist”.  I just recently moved my mic & other various equipment that I had at home to our new studio in Manhattan.  ”Double Shot Studios” is located 247 W 30th street between 7th & 8th…we will be open for business on the 1st of January, so definitely contact me or Anzam here or on Myspace to book time and/or for production & features.  Back to the project… My favorite track so far is called “Change of Heart”…I did the beat, and the reason it is my favorite contribution production-wise to the project is because the drums mesh so well with the chops & it gave me a lot of room for flow creativity.  Right now, the album/mixtape or whatever you want to call it.. is 23 tracks long and that doesn’t include the instrumental interludes nor skits.  Another stand out track off the top of my head is “Suicide Mission” produced by Joey P of Double Shot.  The reason I love the beat is because he captured the type of rapid fire vietnam flow that I like to attach to my name as an artist.  It was also one of those tracks that didn’t need a hook, it just needed as many bars as I could write… something like “Man on Fire” produced by Velotz…Speaking of Velotz, I think he has the most production on the album besides myself.  His stand out track is probably “I’m Not Alone” which is a definite street banger that gave me a nostalgic state of mind while writing/recording it.  I have this one track by John John that I haven’t finished writing yet.  It’s called “Playground”, and I can definitely see it being a fan favorite as the album spreads worldwide.  Naturally, Big KO laced me with some hard decisions…but I found a definite called “Triumph” which you can hear a snippit of on the Autopsy Promo along with the Joey P track “Suicide Mission.”  I have a couple of tracks from Sly Vest which I am scattering through, one which reminds me of “Sister Morphine”..just a little faster & harder.  I finished two tracks over Alchemist beats…one Is going straight to the Half-Time Show as a promo.  I appreciate what Dj Eclipse & the fellas do up there, so I try to give them as many exclusives as I can.  OKAY, enough blogging for one night… I have to finish watching House of Saddam, then maybe toss Iron Man on… I’m hitting the lab tomorrow morning to finish up this track I did called “Not on the Outside”  I have to sync up all the Cuts John John laid last week… the shits a banger…

get at me
