As usual. Â I am fed up with Hip-Hop. Â It has only gotten worse as my career starts to take off.
It’s almost as if these guys are magicians with one trick. How the public keeps falling for this same trick is what we need to figure out. I don’t necessarily blame the guys who oversaturate the radio with mediocrity as much as I blame YOU, the consumer. Is it just me? Or does it seem that America is further down on the musical taste list than we are on math grades? Lets try to break this down a little, and come up with a conclusion.
Take the 1960′s for example. The era where there was an abundance of talent spewing out of every genre. You had Motown, Stax, Atlantic holding down the soul & R&B… You had The Beatles, The Doors & The Rolling Stones constantly battling for the #1 slot in Rock-n-Roll… Jazz musicians & Blues artists repeatedly challenged themselves to push the envelope and create new sounds. Bands like Genesis, Pink Floyd & Black Sabbath were creating new sub-genres that have only advanced, and are still going hard to this day (prog rock/metal).
Nevermind music for a second though. Look at Movies from the 70′s. Innovative, controversial scripts were being developed into arguably the greatest movies of all time. It is not a coincidence that the majority of men when asked their favorite top three movies of all time, The Godfather (parts 1 & 2) usually pop up somewhere. I won’t restrict movies to any particular time, or even music. I am simply trying to figure out why when it comes to any topic under the sun, people can usually differentiate good from bad, and arguments over quality seldom occur due to the undeniable truth. Peter Lugers is one of the best steak houses in the country. Not even a stubborn jag-off with no taste buds can dispute that. Salvador Dali was an INCREDIBLE artist. You may not be a fan of his work, but you cannot deny the level of skill. I HATED Michael Jordan because Charles Barkley always lost to him, but how could I ever say he wasn’t top three of all time without losing all credibility as a reasonable human being?

For some reason, these basic rules of superiority do not apply to hip hop in this day and age. According to me, the first rule of traveling down the road of becoming a great rapper is that you must also become a great writer. Of course being a great writer will not help you quantize your flow, find that vocal pocket, capture the right cadence, or even write topics people will take the time to listen to. Without breaking down each little weapon my idea of a great rapper must possess, you must understand where I am going with this. I will not shit on Drake or Lil Wayne like most people who claim to be true hip hop fans will. I would be an imbecile if I denied that they both have skill, in more than one aspect. Do I personally like their music? Hell fuckin’ no. Do I think either of them or Rick Ross can compete with some of my peers on the underground when it comes to lyrics? Yes. Do I think some of my peers are WAY better? Yes. Call me crazy, but I am not really trying to listen to a rapper who only talks about Lamborghini’s, models, selling drugs, and having spent more on his chain than you may ever accumulate throughout your life. Why you ask? … because I… and I feel comfortable speaking for you also, can relate to “Hey I just met you, and this is crazy.. but here’s my number.. call me maybe” more than “Lamborghini Merci.. your bitch she’s so thirsty”.
I understand some people will say, “but Vic.. this is how Hip Hop has always been and will always be” … Then I reply with, “No. This is how RADIO hip hop has always been, and apparently is getting worse.” I listen to sad songs like Stevie Wonders “Visions” when I am feeling melancholy. I listen to Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” when my face is covered by shades, I am feeling anti-establishment and I want everyone near my car to hear how sinister Ozzy sounds. I listen to Exuma “Monkberry Moon Delight” when I am in a good mood or with my siblings (we all love that song).
My point is, I understand some people may magnetize to a hip hop hook.. they may love the beat.. they may just want to blast something with 808 cancer. Why though, must hip hop that controls the radio be aimed at the interests of “The wealthy 1%”? An artform that started in the ghetto, flourished in the 90′s when it integrated with poetry and literature should not be controlled by “Hip Hop Republicans” who pretend to be revolutionists. The list of rappers “at the top” remind me of George W. Bush’s cabinet. HEAR ME OUT…
These guys all work with the same producers, who in turn get them all on the same features. They all tour together, appear in music videos together..buy the same cars, watches, even drink the same alcohol because they get paid to promote it together. If one of them has a successful record, the next guy follows up with something that sounds identical and YOU BUY IT! They blatantly tell you how they will steal your girl, bring her into a Lambo, fuck her, then drop her off.. and you bump this shit in your car? It really amazes me how similar Hip Hop and a Republican cabinet are. The real revolutionists and freedom fighters are the MC’s on the underground, which is NOT an appealing word I prefer for describing such skilled artists without any type of buzz or budget. So the next time you hear one of these scum bags telling you how great they are compared to your ordinary BORING bullshit, turn the fucking radio off. Don’t support “DJ’s” who don’t make their own playlists. I know all about PAYOLA, because I have met with a few, and even paid a few of these low lives to play records for me in the past. Dear DJ Scrap Daddy Superiority, you are sucking all the life out of our culture, and certainly DO NOT deserve to even speak your mind to so many people daily.. but you also DO NOT deserve to retain false power and shun excellent songs that remain below the surface JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN. WE ALL KNOW HIP HOP IS DEAD. NOT THE MUSIC, BUT THE ENTIRE CULTURE OF GOING DOWN TO THE STORE AND CHECKING AN ARTISTS ALBUM OUT BASED ON HIS PREVIOUS RECORD & WORD ON THE STREET. YOU HAVE EUTHENIZED A CULTURE I ONCE LOVED, AND DEDICATED A LARGE % OF MY LIFE TO BECOME GOOD AT. YOU ARE LIKE THE MOVIE CRITICS WHO’S WEBSITE HAS ABRAHAM LINCOLN THE VAMPIRE HUNTER RATED AT NUMBER ONE.. ONLY TO FIND THAT THEYRE ARE TWO ADS FOR THAT MOVIE ON YOUR SIDEBAR.
Anyhow… this republican rap as cheap as it is.. may just turn out to be the music you deserve to listen to. If you are a frequent radio listener, your opinion doesn’t count anyway. I am simply trying to put you on to quality.. the same way I would tell you to go down to Giulio Cesare and order the gnocchi bolognese, the baked clams, the caesar salad with aliche, and the veal oso bucco!!!
Thank you for reading my rant!

You’re speaking some real shit here.. This “radio era” is sickening..
Holy shit! Thanks for this well worded post. I’m from the golden age of Hip Hop. It’s nice to see cats out there that get it.
For folks like us, it’s easy as pie to diss Drake, Wayne, and whatever Auto-Tuned rappers are the dish du jour, but why are we mad?
Besides the obvious (aww man, they can’t really rap) I just can’t relate to anyone who wastes so much time trying to succeed when apparently their level of success is so unhopefully low that it consists of you trying to impress a hundred other mother fuckers out there that are just like you. Huh?
Anyway, no rants… I promised my Guru.
This was Mastabeta of the MOTHERFUCKIN’SMASHERS.

Locksmith Music is now setting up all the other sites they believe I should be on, I don’t know if I can keep up. Plus I try to keep different passwords for everything. I have a Linkedin profile I think, but I found it kind of pointless back when I signed up… you recommend it?
Thanks for reading,
